Summary: Incoming correspondence to the London Missionary Society Headquarters from missionaries in Switzerland. The main correspondence from Switzerland is from Basle [Basel, Bâle], where the first secretary of the Basel Christianity Society was the young Charles Frederick Adolph Steinkopff [Karl Friedrich Adolf Steinkopf], the committee expressing delight at the LMS’s early success in sending missionaries to Tahiti and sending money collected from many places in Switzerland and southern Germany. Successive secretaries, Johannes Schäufelin and Christian Gottlieb Blumhardt maintained the correspondence until the Basle Mission [Basler Mission] (German Missionary Society (subsequently Basel Evangelical Missionary Society) now incorporated in Mission21 was launched. Later correspondence with S Thomas at Lausanne deals with (abortive) suggestions of Swiss missionaries with the LMS.
