Incoming correspondence to the London Missionary Society Headquarters from missionaries in Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
Earliest Swedish interest in the LMS is shown by letters from Gothenbourg [Göteborg] addressed to C F A Steinkopf [Karl Friendrich Adolf Steinkopf]. Corespondence from Stockholm comes much later when the Swedish Missionary Society started in 1835. The first contact from Stockholm worthy of note was Cornelius Rahmn, who had served the LMS in Russia and in 1835 became the Swedish society’s correspondent in London.
The Danish connection with British protestant missionaries began early when British ships refused to convey them because of the British East India Company’s ban on missionaries in their areas. The [Particular] Baptist Missionary Society, sent William Carey and his companions in a Danish ship and the LMS likewise arranged passage of 7 missionaries to Tranquebar [Taranambadi] in 1803/1804. Denmark letters include correspondence about this transportation and further contact with Daniel Koefoed. |
