Has remained in Mauritius longer than planned due to a "severe affection of the spleen, a consequence of the fever in the Quilimane [Quelimane] delta" and the curative effects of the climate; has been accommodated by Major-General Hay, whose house is 5 miles from Port Luis [Port Louis]; desire to meet Commodore Trotter to talk to him about Africa and his plans to return there "with or without the aid of our Society"; discusses practical arrangements re his belongings and "debts of honour" owed, which mean he is considerably poorer than when he arrived in Africa 16 years ago; refers to the position of and agreement with George Flemming (see letter 100); discusses business and financial matters.
