description |
Has reached the "farthest inland station at present occupied by the Portuguese" [Tette, Tete]; arrived at the Zambesi [Zambezi] below the Falls, near its confluence with the Kafue or Bashukulompo River, where all of the oxen were killed by Tsetse; no money to purchase a canoe, so has travelled on foot; in good health; kindness of Portuguese - talks of his initial prejudice against them because if their involvement with the slave trade; belief that the Zambesi will allow water carriage all the way [from the coast] to the Makololo; fever more prevalent on the Coast than inland; intends to rest then proceed down the river to Quilimane [Quelimane]; some notes re business and money.
