Summary: Directors have set him to write a dictionary of Sitchuana [seTswana], but has not yet consented as it would interfere with his other duties; comments on Robert Moffat junior; confusion in the [Cape] Colony with wars and rumours of wars, "Caffres, Hottentots, Bechuanas, Boers & English all at loggerheads"; missionaries coming in for a share of abuse and blame; critical of the Society's unwillingness to move on from Christianized populations - should not wait create a new generation of "model Christians", all should be given a chance where possible; bitterness from Grahamstown people ("frontier colonists") towards missionaries; departure in April accompanied by William Oswell; visited Sekhomi [Sekgoma] to assist with hils illness [stomach ulcers]; journey north, across the desert guided by Shobo (a "bushman") who was following old elephant paths; no water for 4 days, followed a Rhinocerous trail and reached water in the Mababi River; journey to Sebitoane [Sebtwane] through Tsetse country to the banks of the Chobe; account of Sebitoane; accompanied back to waggons by Sebitoane; sickness and death of Sebitoane.
