description |
Views of Rev J. J. Freeman and scepticism over the likely outcomes of his recent deputation to southern Africa, including his short visit to Kolobeng; discusses the general state of Christian missions in the Colony and remarks on how the LMS is the only society that works to uphold the rights of the "coloured population" - "the Wesleyans, Dutch Reformed & English church devote themselves almost exclusively to the whites"; discusses his views of the Dutch Reformed clergy in detail; questions the rationale of keeping their missions in the Colony and proposes an "onward movement"; comments on Freeman's opposition to Presbyterianism and his own views; discusses Mr Elliott's letters to the secretary of the Evangelical Alliance re the mission system in the Colony and the Doctor's [Dr John Philip] opposition to these letters; refers to his work on a grammar of the Sichuana [seTswana] language and discusses the characteristics of the language and asks whether he could get 20 or 30 copies printed for private circulation - requests Watt to look into the costs of this.
