description Correspondence between Captain Ernest E. Kettle of the missionary ship John Williams IV, and LMS headquarters, London, dated 1929 to 1943. Refers to the establishment of a new missionary ship John Williams V in 1929, and the arrangements for the mission ship system in the South Seas. Includes details of pay and arrangements for Captain Kettle, and copies of resolutions by both the Ship Committee and the Australian Ship Committee. Captain Kettle is unable to take charge of the new schooner on the required terms. Further correspondence dated 1936 consists of a request by Captain Kettle to be reinstated on a missionary basis. He was appointed temporarily to replace Captain Hope-Evans and permanently in September 1937, with his appointment as a missionary with the Society. Contains details of the extension of his service in 1941, and pension details. Includes correspondence with Norman Goodall in his role as Foreign Secretary of the LMS, and with A. Chirgwin.
