Summary: |
Journal of James Chalmers, June - July 1875, describing his voyage from Rarotonga to the out stations of the mission in the Cook Islands. The islands visited include Aituitaki, where Henry Royle was stationed, then travels to Mauke, Mitiaro, Atiu, Penrhyn Atoll, Manihiki, Rakahanga and Pukapuka where the native teachers reside. Some of these islands have recently experienced measles epidemics. He also records his advice concerning divorce and the marriage laws, as well as commenting on the ability of the native churches to operate independently of English missionaries. Journal has been heavily edited in pencil. |
