Summary: Journal of William Wyatt Gill and Peter Bird January - February 1863, recording their voyage in the John Williams from Samoa to the Tokelau Islands - Matauta, Fakaofo (or Bowditch's Island), Nukunono (or Duke of Clarence's Island) and Atafu (or Duke of York's Island). Travelling with them were some 'natives' of the Tokelau groups returning to their homes from Samoa after their canoes had been blown off course. Describes some difficulties arising from the presence Roman Catholic priests, also mentions the introduction of leprosy to these islands.
