From 1848 French government of Tahiti altered the constitution of the Congregational churches merging them with the island's political Districts. The new law allotted appointment of ministers to landed proprietors and if non-Tahitians appointments must be approved by the Governor. Subsequently (by 1852) Governor laid down further regulations: Missionaries replaced by Tahitians as pastors (chosen by chiefs, not members) for churches on Tahiti
Alexander Simpson employed by French Government to have charge of Eimeo [Moorea]. Shall missionaries migrate to the Leeward islands (i.e. Western group of Society Islands)?
Alexander Chisholm and John Barff resign their mission stations rather than hold them under new law
Unable to place William Lind and George Spencer, newly arrived missionaries due to French restrictions.
Admiral Moresby shows interest in missionaries' plight and writes to Earl of Northumberland on their behalf.
