Summary: Mrs Smith to the Directors of the London Missionary Society and William Alers Stanley Esq - Release of all claim on the part of Mrs Smith in respect of the sums of £931.16.2 and £967.1.2 raised for her benefit, 24 Feb 1825. Jane Smith (nee Jane Godden) was the widow of the late Rev John Smith, LMS missionary at Demarara, West Indies, who died in prison on 6 Dec 1824, having been charged with aiding a rebellion of enslaved Africans on the plantation at Le Resouvenir [Demerara Rebellion of 1823]. He was due to be released but died from disease before this could happen. Following his death, funds were raised for the provision of his widow, who was left "destitute" at his death. These were placed in Trust and paid as an annuity for the duration of her life. The remainder of the funds raised were released for the support of the other widows and orphans of missionaries who died in the service of the society.
