Chinese scroll, with inscriptions in Chinese and English. English inscription reads, "On the occasion of the commemoration of the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Dr Morrison's arrival in China this picture with verses in honour of his arrival is presented by the Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China to the London Missionary Society on 7th September 1957". The painting depicts a sailing boat in heavy seas on the crest of a wave, and was painted by Moi Yu Tin, an artist in South China and member of the Hop Yat Church, Hong Kong. The Chinese characters in the top centre of the picture are a poem by the Reverend Lee Ching Ming, Minister of the Hop Yat Church, and can be roughly translated as follows:
"Morrison, minister and great saint, came in a ship
over two oceans to begin the proclamation of the
Gospel in Kwangtung. Making light of the devil's
obstacles he shouldered the work of God.
The Chinese Church whose foundation is
in heaven, through a century and a half
has drawn many to look to it and follow.
The mustard seed has become a tree.
The Kingdom of God is without limit.
Morrison has bequeathed an undying love which the
Chinese people will always remember."
