The painting was commissioned by members of the British East India Company Factory at Canton as a tribute to Morrison. The inscription below the engraving reads "To the Revd Dr Morrison, this Portrait of himself engaged in Translating the Bible into the Chinese Language is dedicated in unanimous testimony of their regards by the members of the British Factory in China". Engraving published in London March 29th 1880 by Mr Turner, 50 Warren Street Fitzroy Square. The original painting was destroyed in a fire in 1874. Only printed copies and engravings survive.
