scb_admin_history Work began in Australia when the Rev. Thomas Quinton Stow was sent to Adelaide by the Colonial Missionary Society. He was followed in 1838 by Rev. William Waterfield who was sent to the area of New South Wales that would later become Victoria. In 1851, Rev. James Leonard went to Perth in Western Australia. The CMS supported the development of Congregationalism within Australia, with the Churches being strongest at the end of the 19th century. During the 20th century however, the number of Congregationalists fell as the population in the country expanded.
