She studied in the Economics and Political Science Department at Cairo University. At the time of the interview, she was starting her PhD comparing the women's movements in Egypt and Iran after their respective revolutions. During her time at university she was involved with civil society organisations but not any political groups. She later joined the Women Living Under Muslim Laws group, where she became a board member in 2012. She also joined Nazra for Feminist Studies and is a founding member of Ikhtiyar, ‘choice’, the latter of which works to create an Egyptian discourse on human rights and gender equality. During the Revolution, she worked with Nazra, helping to spread ideas of women's right and feminism. She continues to be active within these organisations at the time of the interview.
