Laila was born in London, England in 1956 but grew up in Cairo. Her parents were university professors in the faculty of arts. Leila graduated from Cairo University in 1977 with a degree in mathematics. After graduation Leila immediately began working as an assistant at Cairo University and went on to complete her doctorate in maths as well. Leila's activism began during her university years when she participated in numerous demonstrations in the late 1970s known as the bread demonstrations. Leila became the co-founder of Kefaya- the Egyptian movement for change, and was involved in the March 2006 demonstrations for the independence of universities. She was also an active member in the Egyptian Organization before the group split into separate factions. |
