description The two contract registers provide a formal record of the main business conducted by the Chinese Government Purchasing Commission - the management of contracts for the supply and delivery in China of such plant, machinery and other materials to be manufactured in the UK as required and ordered by the Chinese Government through the Board of Trustees. The registers record the name of the contractors (British manufacturers), the consignee in China (e.g. Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Communications, National Construction Commission), the date of the contract, a summary of the materials to be purchased and shipped, delivery dates, terms of payment, total cost, invoice details, payments made and codes (including purchase order number, contract number and indent number). Each entry in the registers links up to an individual contract file by means of the contract number (e.g. A1, B1, C1, D1 etc.). Register 1 records details of contracts A1-A500. Register 2 records details of contracts A501-A1018, B1-B129, C1-C3, D1-D5, and "Q" contracts (Q1/F1-Q8/F14). In this way the registers act as a useful finding aid to the series of contract files. The distinction between the sub-series of contracts (i.e. "A", "B", "C", "D" and "Q") is not made clear. The name "Sir John Beles & Co" is recorded in the register at the beginning of the "C" contract series, and "Sir Alexander Gibb & Partner" at the beginning of the "D" contract series. IMPORTANT NOTE: The registers are not comprehensive in their coverage of the contract files (i.e. in some cases contract files exist where there is no corresponding register entry). Thus, particular care should be paid to contracts with numbers from A656-A746, A900-A930, A1000-1044, B900-B909 as many of thee do not appear in the registers. It is not known why certain contracts have not been recorded in this way.
