Frances Helen Freeman (d.1934) was a missionary in Algeria from 1891, having joined Lilias Trotter in the early work of the Algiers Mission Band. They had earlier worked together among underprivileged women in London and were lifelong friends. Helen invested a good deal of her personal income in the purchase of a farm at Bou Hanefia and various mission houses in Algeria, selling the last – at Relizane [Ghilizan] – in 1931. She resided for many years Mascara, Relizane and Mostaganem. Towards the end of Lilias Trotter’s life Helen was with her at Dar Naama, the headquarters of the Band, eventually succeeding her as leader of the work at the age of 85. Her obituary states that ‘in spite of frailty of body she has been a mainspring of the work, and her life and dauntless spirit have been a constant inspiration to all who knew her.’ She died suddenly in 1934 in her ninetieth year.
