The Journals began in 1907, the year of the formal constitution of the Algiers Mission Band, and ran until 1925. They provided a chronological survey month by month of what was happening on the field for the benefit of prayer supporters at home, giving news of the various mission stations and specific information about their ministry and those for whom they particularly desired prayer. The early volumes were circulated in a round robin fashion. They supplement the material given in the annual resumés of the year's work, sometimes called 'The Story of 19..'., and the more detailed prayer points in 'Together' [of which only a few issues are extant, edited by Isabella Lilias Trotter]. They were superceded in 1927 by a published quarterly magazine, 'A Thirsty Land'.
The Journals give insight into missiological thinking [strategy, contextualisation, Bible translation, colportage etc.]; the early literature ministry and the link with the Nile Mission Press; prayer and spiritual warfare; consideration of the unreached areas in the south and the Brotherhoods of Mystics; care for women, children and individual converts; the beginnings of a national church; interactions by letter and inner workings of the Band; the breadth and depth of Lilias Trotter's work; relations with the French colonial authorities; the strategy in relation to stations and the personal fortunes that some members poured into the work. |
