Summary: This unpublished manuscript comprises 112 photographs documenting music and dance in the Indian subcontinent plus an accompanying text. The photographs were taken by Arnold Baké during 1938 and 1939, under a Spalding Fellowship of Brasenose College, Oxford University. The manuscript is divided into four sections: masks and faces; dance; instruments; and onlookers. The manuscript is inscribed 'To H. N. and Mrs Spalding in deepest gratitude Arnold A Baké' [Henry Norman Spalding, 1877-1953].

Admin history: Arnold Adriaan Baké was born in Hilversum in the Netherlands on 19 May 1899. He was educated at the Haarlem Gymnasium and entered the University of Leiden in 1918, where he studied languages including Javanese, Malay, Arabic and Sanskrit. His hope was to enter government service in the Netherland Indies. Economic pressures on the government meant that this was not possible and instead, Baké considered becoming a professional singer.
