Admin history: Arthur Robert Down was born on 4 October 1907 at Exeter. He trained at Western College. He was ordained on 13 July 1936 at Southernhay, Exeter. He married Kathleen Estelle Ainsworth on 6 May 1932. He was appointed as a missionary to Madagascar with the London Missionary Society and sailed 9 April 1937. During the war Madagascar was ruled by Vichy France and was invaded and taken over by the British and South Africans.
