Summary: Copy of a Trinity Theological Seminary PhD Thesis by David Anthony Huntley. 'An Understanding of the Methodology and Decision-Making Processes' behind the withdrawal of the CIM from China in 1951, following the Communist movement's gaining control of the country during 1949 and 1950, and its redepolyment as the Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF) in East Asia. The thesis explores: the background situation in China; the history and 'in-house' ethos of the CIM; missionaries' reactions to the emergence of Communism in China and their expulsion; the influence of conferences at Kalorama, Bournemouth and near Melbourne on the decision to redeploy in East Asia and (with a chapter for each relevant country) the foundation, work and difficulties of OMF missions in East Asia.

Admin history: David Anthony Huntley studied for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theology with an emphasis in Missiology at Trinity Theological Seminary, Newburgh, Indiana, USA (accredited by the University of Liverpool, UK). He had previously completed a dissertation entitled 'Video and Missions: a consideration of the missiological use of video, with special reference to the Thailand Hospital video venture together with a study of the likely impact of video and teletext in missiological applications in developing countries' in 1981.
