Letters written by Alfred Sadd, 1935-1942, during his time in the Gilbert Islands leading up to the Japanese occupation. Includes letters to his 'Aunty Girty and Uncle Gen', in addition to circular letters discussing his life and missionary work in the Gilberts. Also includes letters, tributes and cuttings following his death in 1942, and an account of his capture by the Japanese and subsequent death written by May Pateman. Also included is a typescript account headed 'Japanese Interlude', which describes the situation in the British Concession, Tientsin, under the Japanese occupation, and camp life within the Japanese internment camp at Weihsien, 1943-1945 (author not identified).

Alfred Lionel Sadd (1909-1942) was appointed to the Gilbert Islands to serve as a missionary with the London Missionary Society in 1933. In 1942 he was taken prisoner by the Japanese and killed on October 15 1942. |

Papers donated to SOAS Library in August 2011 by Gillian Harvey. They were found amongst the correspondence of Marion Girling, first cousin to the donor's father, as was Alfred Sadd. |
