Cecil John Davenport (1863-1926), served as a medical missionary in China with the London Missionary Society, 1889-1926. He was born at Adelaide, South Australia, on 26 May 1863. He worked as House Surgeon at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, 1887-1888. He was appointed medical missionary at Chung-King, West China, and sailed in 1889, arriving at his post in 1890. He married Amelia Miles on 17 Oct 1891, at the Cathedral, Shanghai. They settled at Wuchang in 1896. Dr Davenport was invalided home during the Boxer uprising in 1900. At the end of 1904, he was transferred from Wuchang to Shanghai to take charge of the Shantung Road Hospital. He was President of the China Medical Missionary Association. He was decorated for "Service" by the Chinese Government in 1920. He died at Shanghai on 4 September 1926. |
