Three original photographs and photocopies of 6 additional photographs depicting scenes in Peking between 1912 and 1916. Original photographs are of people at Peking Railway Station and on the road in March 1912, during the disturbances of that period. There is also a photograph of several men who worked at the Peking Union Medical College pictured with their babies, including Dr Gibb [James Glenny Gibb, medical missionary with the LMS in Peking, 1908-1912], ERW [Edwin Robert Wheeler], Dr Stuckey [Edward Joseph Stuckey, medical missionary with the LMS, 1905-], Dr Stenhouse [John Maitland Stenhouse, medical missionary with the LMS, 1915-1916], Dr Peill ? [Ernest John Peill, medical missionary with the LMS, 1901-, OR Sidney George Peill, 1906-], and Dr Hill [Richard Athelstane Parker Hill, medical missionary with the LMS, 1909-1913]. Copy images include scenes of Peking, July 1915, showing people taking down the wall to relieve traffic congestion; stone figures in the Avenue near the Ming tombs; and scenes from the funeral of Yuan Shik, 28 June 1916, taken from the city wall. Also includes a document written in Chinese, presumed to relate to the Peking Union Medical College. |

Admin history: | Edwin Robert Wheeler worked at the Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) with the Baptist Missionary Society in the early years of the 20th century. He married Emily Gertrude Meech in January 1910, daughter of Rev Samuel Evans Meech, a missionary in Peking with the London Missionary Society between 1871 and 1922. Photographs date from this period. | ||||||
