Peter Boode was born in Holland in 1887. After working for a rubber company for some years, in Singapore and the Dutch East Indies [Indonesia], he was transferred to Shanghai about 1920 where he spent the next five years. Here, he learnt to speak Chinese and began collecting antiques. After his return to Holland, in 1925, he started a Chinese antique business in The Hague. To maintain his stock he paid annual visits to China. In 1935 he moved to London, opening a gallery in Mount Street. His expertise lay in antiques up to and including the Ming period and in 1943 he published Notes for collectors of Chinese Antiques from remote antiquity to the end of the Ming period . His collection was put into store during the Second World War. After the War he opened another gallery in London where he remained in business for a few years before retiring to Jersey. He died in Jersey in 1972. |
