Stephen Yates, born 30 Dec 1911 at Liverpool; trained at Bangor University; married Freda Millicent Cook (born 29 Jul 1913, at Billericay), 23 Aug 1941; Dedication service, 10 May 1947 at Salesbury Park Congregational Church, Wrexham; appointed by the London Missionary Sciety to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 1947; sailed 9 Jan 1948; headmaster of the Poreporena schools in Port Moresby, 1948-1955; transferred 1955 to Koaru, where he pioneered the first London Missionary Society High School in the Territory; retired from service with the Society, 30 Apr 1968.
Mrs Freda Yates served with her husband from 1948-1954, in the Poreporena Schools, Port Moresby, Papua, teaching English and Needlework to senior pupils. She later served in the newly established Boy's High School at Koaru, where she was greatly concerned with Sunday School work, helping also with Bible translation, until 1964, when she returned to England. |
