Notebook belonging to Miss Frances S Hey. Initially records information under three headings: 'Handwork', 'Book binding' and 'General hints' with descriptions and diagrams of crafts, handwritten in ink. Many pages have been left blank and the notebook appears to have been turned over and reused to record notes on the history, culture and botany of Ceylon and South India. These later notes are in pencil and include some landscape sketches as well as botanical drawings. A number of items were placed loosely within the covers of the volume. These include various letters to FSH; invitaions to weddings; newspaper clippings; printed illustrations; black and white postcard views of Compton Wyngates topiary garden, and the city of Haarlem; a list of Singhalese, Kandyan, Tamil, Malay and Mohammedan names, short ms article 'Glimpses of life along the road in Ceylon'. There are also a number of pressed botanical specimens.

Miss Frances S Hey was a teacher at Southlands College - a secondary school for Girls established by the Methodist Missionary Society at Galle, Ceylon [Sri Lanka]- from 1924 - 1926. She appears to have studied at the University of Manchester before taking up this position. In 1925 she holidayed with a colleague from the school - Miss M Freethy, at Diniyaya, Galle - an event which she records with a sketch of the location in her notebook. |
