Summary: Copy photographs of the King's Birthday Parade held on 3-4 June 1927 in Shanghai. The Kings Birthday parade was an annual affair - but the size of this one and the two shots of the burning 'Kremlin' point to its being the two-day event held on June 3rd and 4th which is described at length in the North China Herald 11 June 1927 pp.472-73. This piece of anti-communist Imperial theatre was given its zest by the presence in Shanghai of the 10,000 strong Shanghai Defence force and the fiercly anti-communist atmosphere prevailing at the time in the foreign community. These photographs were taken by Donaldson. Accompanying notes suggest that four photographs show a trooping of the colours of the 2nd Battalion of the Cold Stream Guards at the Racecourse. Four photographs show the burning of a mockup of the Kremlin, as an act of anti-communist propaganda.
