Captain William Essington Kent was born in Dewlish, Dorset in 1867. After serving his apprenticeship on sailing ships he went out to China where he first became a travelling pilot on Candian Pacific liners and, later, a Shanghai Licensed pilot. In 1923 he narrowly survived the earthquake at Yokohama where he also took part in a great deal of rescue work. He died at Dorchester, England in 1935 and is buried at his birth-place, Dewlish.
His son, Noel Essington Kent, was born in 1903. He worked for a subsidiary of Arnhold?s in Shanghai. When the Communists came to power in 1949 he moved to Natal in South Africa. He died in 1991. |
