An account of a journey from Rangoon [Yangon] by train and steamer to Mandalay which took place between 21 January and 14 February 1879. The author describes the Burma landscape and climate in detail, and mentions stops made along the journey, including Thayetmyoo [Thayet], Prome [Pyay], and Yaynangyoung [Yenangyaung]. The illustrations and photographs include Ananda Temple, the Royal Palace of Mandalay, and the Royal White Elephants. It also contains the author's account of an interview with the Kinwun Mingyi U Kaung, then-Chief Minister of Burma, and King Thibaw, and closes with an appeal for official intervention to open up trade with Upper Burma.

Kirkman Finlay, born in 1847, was the first managing director of the Burmah Oil Company. He first visited Rangoon [Yangon] in 1867. He spent some time in Burma [Myanmar] before returning to the UK later in his life, eventually passing in 1903.
