Prefaced by 16 pages Grammatical Notices On The Lepcha Language. 213 x 270 mm.; pages numbered, damaged, pagination only appears clearly from pp. 200-355, text of the dictionary is 335 pp., plus extensive appendix of 271 pp., some blank pages at the end of the ms.; book, bound; machine-made paper; text written in black ink; lines sometimes drawn in pencil; margins sometimes drawn in pencil; ms. is kept in a red box, typed label: 'Maker of Dictionary William Stölke, b. 1849. Tea planter, born and brought up near Darjeeling. Descended from Brandenburgh Prussian family with big estates. Family tree goes back to 1640. His elder brother John, also a tea panter, helped him in this work. They were born and brought up where they did their work and knew the language as well as their own. This dictionary was bought by the Director on behalf of the School for £10 on 10th September, 1956. (LOF 2365); inside cover notes: J. Chelttebrugh John+William Stolke. Died about 1910 or 1911. Norman, William Patterson. Sinclairs uncles (died 1933). Married the sister of John and William Stolke. Opened up Risheehat Teas estate as one of the first pioneers of tea in Darjeeling. This Estate known to the natives as ‘Siring Kaman’, Stein Thal Tea Estate started by John and William Sinclair and then both later passed into hands of Sinclairs as a Sinclair'; enclosed quire of 16 pp. of blue machine-made paper entitled: 'Grammatical Notices on the Lepcha Language'.
