Translation into English by Rev. Thomas McClatchie of the Liji 禮記 (Chinese: “Record of Rites”) ,Wade-Giles romanization Li-chi, one of the Five Classics (Wujing) of Chinese Confucian literature, the original text of which is said to have been compiled by the ancient sage Confucius (551–479 BC). This translation covers 49 chapters of the Liji. It must have been composed between 1870 and 1882 (while McClatchie was Secretary of the CMS).

Rev. Thomas McClatchie was born in 1812 and educated at Trinity College. He joined the Church Missionary Society in 1843 and was one of the first two CMS missionaries to China. However due to failing health he returned to England in 1854. He went back to China in 1863 and in addition to his missionary work became Chaplain to the British Legation. He became Canon of the St John's Cathedral Hong-Kong, and later Canon of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Shanghai. In 1865 he became British Consular at Hankow. In 1870 he left the Chaplaincy, returned to Shanghai to become Secretary of the Church Missionary Society Mission. He lived in Shanghai until his retirement from active service in 1882. He died on June 4th 1884. |
