An economist and senior civil servant, Sir Tim served as Private Secretary at 10 Downing Street from 1978 to 1981. Prior to joining SOAS he was Permanent Secretary of the Overseas Development Administration and was appointed Permanent Secretary of the Department for Education in 1994. During his directorship, the School increased its international profile, ensuring support for many of its activities.
