Piiphaat is a Thai traditional music ensemble indispensable in ceremonies like wai khruu (paying respects to teachers), masked dance drama (khoon), shadow theatre (nang yai) and popular theatre (likee).Piiphaat ensembles range from small (Khruang haa), medium (khruang khoo) to large (khruang yai). The khruang khoo, established during the reign of King Rama III (1824-51) of Siam, is arguably the most common.
