Summary: 'Kabuki Actor Playing an Evil Spirit Portrayed as a Woman Wearing a Priest's Hat', Barbara Robinson, France, 1968-1969 MEDIUM oil on canvas DIMENSIONS 116 x 80 cm ACQUISITION Gift from the artist REFERENCE LDSAC 2022.5.11 Barbara Robinson started drawing at a very young age and then studied at the Slade School of Art. Her husband Walter Robinson was a lecturer in Ancient Japanese History at SOAS between 1952-1956. This painting is one of a series of five oil paintings of Japanese court dancers, musicians and actors by Robinson that are now held in the SOAS collection. They were inspired by a trip to Japan in 1968 when her husband was being honoured for his academic work at an event held on the grounds of the Imperial Palace. During this trip Robinson executed a number of drawings and studies in gouache that she later developed into oil painting upon their return to France This is part of the SOAS Artwork & Object Collections.
