The pine tree is an auspicious symbol of longevity in east Asia, and has a special significance in Japan as the tree where both Shinto and Buddhist deities manifest. The homonyms of the words “matsu” (pine tree) and “Matsu” (wait) indicate the tree that awaits the manifestation of deities. |
