Chinese artist Mei Qi produced this work after the famous One Hundred Horses, by Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766), an Italian Jesuit missionary who became a painter at the court of the Qing Emperor. Qi’s painting is influenced by Castigilione but also follows Chinese techniques of painting.
