Summary: Painting of Massacre during the ‘Red Terror’, by Alle Feleghe Selam Hiruy, 1976, Ethiopia MEDIUM Oil on board DIMENSIONS 60 X 72 cm ACQUISITION Gift from Angela Penrose in 2017 REFERENCE LDSAC 2021.2.14 Alle Feleghe Selam Hiruy (1923 – 2016) was born in Fiche, Sellale in the highlands of Ethiopia into a family of Ethiopian artists, who had historically painted for churches. He moved to Chicago to study fine art before returning to Addis Ababa to found Ethiopia’s first art school and become its Director in 1959. The two paintings at SOAS come from a time when Alle was distinctly uneasy with many developments in Ethiopia. He painted pictures of hunger victims and was acutely aware that the famine in the highlands of Ethiopia in the1970s was due to far more than lack of rain. He went through the turmoil of the overthrow of Haile Selassie in 1974 and the rise of the Derg military committee. This painting dates from the early days of the Derg and depicts a massacre in the eastern town of Harar. This is part of the SOAS Artwork & Object Collections.
