Summary: Colourful Slum, by Ehigbor lyoghiojie, Nigeria, 2000 MEDIUM Oil on canvas DIMENSIONS 100.5 x 131 cm ACQUISITION Donated by Bruce Onabrakpeya, 2005. REFERENCE LDSAC 2021.2.12 This painting by Ehigbor Osagie-Bruce Jude lyoghiojie reflects the artist’s preoccupations with his immediate environment and the visceral colours produced by tropical light. He was born in 1971 and graduated from Auchi School of Arts and Vocational Studies in 1998. lyoghiojie has been vocal in his opposition to the military regimes in place in Nigeria during the 1990s and, despite its vibrant colour, this image highlights his concerns for the difficulties that confront ordinary people. He chose to leave the country soon after graduating, and currently resides in Malawi, where he continues to explore the possibilities of colour within a figurative tradition. He returned briefly in 2000 to attend the annual Harmattan workshop in the Niger delta where he painted this picture. This workshop is organised by the celebrated Nigerian artist Bruce Onabrakpeya, who kindly donated this picture to SOAS in 2005. This is part of the SOAS Artwork & Object Collections.
