Palm Tree Landscape is painted by an unknown artist and is part of a gift to SOAS of some of Margaret Trowell’s materials, including five paintings by students she trained. After moving to Uganda in 1935 with her husband, she introduced informal art classes into the curriculum at Makerere University which later expanded into the first university art school in East Africa. These paintings document her approach to teaching art whereby she encouraged students to draw on their environment and the narratives of local cultures, shaped in part by the missionary ideals of Christianity, which she saw as replacing earlier religious beliefs. In this image, palm trees are rhythmically placed against a curvilinear patterning of land and lake/sky that is enhanced by the luminous quality of the colours employed by the artist
