Records, 1926-1951, relating to the foundation and constitution of the CGPC comprise printed report of the Anglo-Chinese Advisory Committee (China Indemnity Advisory Committee), 1926; correspondence, largely letters from the Board of Trustees to the CPGC, 1931-1950, concerning the constitution of the Commission, procedural issues, personnel and financial matters; file on procedure on appointment of a new member of the Commission, 1947-1948; correspondence concerning events preceding the winding-up of the Commission, 1951. Admin history: The Chinese Government Purchasing Commission was constituted by the China Indemnity (Application) Act of 1931, which implemented the terms of the Exchange of Notes between the Chinese and British Government, dated September 19th and 22nd 1930, concerning the disposal of the British share of the China Indemnity of 1901.

Custodial history: Six packing crates of the Commission's records were found amongst obsolete safe custody items at the HSBC premises in London. The Hong Kong Shanghai Bank acted as official banker to the Commission, but otherwise there is no evidence of a Bank connection such as Commission membership or secretarial duties.
Acquisition: The collection was transferred to SOAS by the Midland Bank PLC in August 1998.
