Area Studies and the importance of 'somewheres'

Summary: This piece reflects on the decline of Area Studies in the Euro- American academy. Although it is sometimes presented and discussed as if it were a discipline, the paper argues that it may be easier to chart an afterlife for Area Studies if we conceive of it as a multidisciplinary field that is predicated upon the significance of place and context, and on the importance of ‘somewheres’.
