JANUARY Meetings at the Bank of England on nitrate position; Addis makes speech at the China Consortium at a dinner for Sidney Mayers of the British and Chinese Corporation (B&C Corp.)., 'It will be reported and will make good propaganda,' 19; Stabb to take over as senior London manager of Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), Addis to be permanent chairman of London Committee; family visited by Addis's sister Susan. FEBRUARY Attending many meetings and also lectures by Keynes at London School of Economics. MARCH Gives talk on 'China' to St Felix School, Southwold, Suffolk. APRIL To Tangier with daughter Robina for Bank of Morocco meeting; on return 'P&O officials, the Marine Supt. Baggage Officer, met us and vied with each other in offers of assistance to the Director.' 16; meets new Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Robert Horne. 'His political rise has been phenomenal,' 19; meets and is impressed by Lord Burghclere of the P&O; attends currency discussions with the manager of the Java Bank; attends meetings with Sir George Paish, economist, on German reparations. MAY Meets Chinese Interior Minister Chu Chi-chien; receives visit from Arnhold of the German Legation on Silesian coalfields; speech to London Missionary Society, 'Two Fallacies and a Great Truth' well received; meets Crown Prince of Japan, to Paris for meetings with the Reparations Commission, 'They have got tied up in a mess and personalities are giving trouble.' 21; awarded KCMG, 'I am very pleased for Eba's sake especially', 27; many congratulations. JUNE Gives lecture to Oxford Economic Society on 'Reconstruction - A Problem in Prices', meets a Durham miner, a friend of daughter Robina, 'Pathetic his eager interest in economics clashing with his socialism', 28; attends meetings to discuss Irish finance. JULY Very hot weather; attends meetings with delegates to International Chambers of Commerce Conference; family holiday at Hillington Hall, Hillington, Norfolk; investiture as KCMG. AUGUST To the United States with Norman, meetings with Federal Reserve bankers, the British Ambassador and President Harding in New York and Washington, 'Each day is a succession of interviews', 25; co-operation over relief for Austria agreed. SEPTEMBER To Montreal to investigate Canadian loan to China at the request of the Foreign Office; meets and is impressed with Wickham Steed, the editor of The Times; on return to England, working on Siamese loan business. OCTOBER Son Tom enters the Inner Temple; 'Jordan called and I spoke some plain words to him on the discouragement and disappointment his silence on the Consortium has caused us.' 18; to Scotland for funeral of brother-in-law Peter Graham; meets the President of the Reichsbank in London on a secret visit forecasting German default if reparations insisted upon; retires from Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) London Office to become chairman of the London Committee. 'I am glad with all my heart to be free and yet there is always something sad in these changes.' 31 NOVEMBER Makes successful inaugural address on the Cunliffe Committee and the gold standard as President of the Institute of Bankers; to the East, with wife and daughter Betty, via Ceylon, Malaya and Singapore. DECEMBER In Hong Kong for lectures and meetings with Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) directors and staff; talks on the Siamese loan and on recognition of the Canton Government.
