Summary: Subjects: 1)    Constance tells how she became engaged to Horace Wilson when preoccupied and distracted by her impending departure for China. 2) Within days she doubted whether she had made the right decision but went off hoping that absence would make the heart grow fonder. 3) She has become miserable but her efforts to persuade Horace to end the engagement have failed and he has referred her to her parents for guidance 4) She finds consolation in her faith in God.
