Admin history: Rev John Smithies (1800-1872) served the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society as a missionary in their Newfoundland District in Canada (1828-1837), The Bahamas District (1837-1838) and in Australia at Swan-river (1839-1853) and York (1853-1855). Smithies then, for the newly formed Australian Wesleyan Methodist Church, served in Tasmania from 1855 until 1872.
