Admin history: Dennis Williams was born in Acton, Middlesex [London], on 7 February 1929 and studied part-time for a degree in chemistry and physics from the University of London. After his ministerial training at Wesley House, Cambridge, he remained in the city to serve his first ministry in 1951. A year later he was posted by the Methodist Missionary Society to serve in Sierra Leone where he took an interest in the Mende language (including translating the Methodist Book of Offices).
