Summary: This costumed man, with an original headgear, was photographed in a Chenchu settlement somewhere in northern Andhra Pradesh. He may be a mendicant, and he appears to be a Chenchu, but he might also be a Telugu peasant. While Christoph von Furer-Haimendorf spent most of his time among the roughly 400 Chenchus living as hunter-gatherers on the Amrabad Plateau, most Chenchus (about 3,000) lived in villages in the plains. Chenchus lived near but were not integrated into the social life of these villages (dominated by local peasant castes).
