500 |a Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf (1909-1995) was born and educated in Vienna, gaining a PhD in anthropology from the University of Vienna in 1931. A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to study at the London School of Economics, under the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. In 1936, he went to the Naga Hills in northeast India for his first fieldwork; over the next four decades, he worked extensively in south & central India, northeast India and Nepal. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at SOAS, where he established the Department of Anthropology. During his career, he published seventeen books, most of them ethnographies of tribal cultures. He was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1975-77) and a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology.

520 3 |a This is a government health clinic in Old Ziro at the northern end of the Apatani valley : the women are Apatani as are the children, whereas the man back to camera, appears to be Indian : the women carry bamboo baskets and umbrellas, a mixture of the old and new : they also wear ceremonial skirts, worn during the Myoko festival in March, when this photograph was taken : Old Ziro developed around the first, semi-permanent government presence in the valley in the 1940s, and by 1978 it was a small town : this clinic, which is still in use, was probably built in the early 1970s : the doctor and nurses working there were all Indian, until the 1990s when tribals from other parts of Arunachal Pradesh and northeast India began to gain qualifications and be employed by the government in schools and health clinics, like this one.
