The skull of the deceased is placed in this stone cist, in the belief that the fertility or "soul force" contained in the head will be channelled back into the earth, and thus increase the fertility of the village.

500 |a The image is part of Album C. The first part of this Album contains photographs taken when Mills was touring with J.H. Hutton in the Konyak country in October 1923. Album B. also contains some photographs taken on this tour. At the time Mills was Assistant Commissioner, based at Mokokchung, and Hutton was Deputy Commissioner at Kohima. The latter part of the Album consists of photographs from other areas. These cannot be dated, but were probably taken at about the same period.
